As I mentioned before (7 months ago), Andy and I loved being home for the holidays. It felt so good to be in our own house and we appreciated being in PA for Christmas. Then, we got the travel bug. Well, I did. I pretty much always have it and Andy just entertains me.
In January I went to Denver to celebrate Brinley's birthday with my family. It was great to have most of us all together in the same house at the same time. That has become very rare! We had a great time hanging out with Brin and celebrating that perfect little girl. Well, at least I think she's perfect. It was a short weekend trip, but so much fun!
February's highlight was that Lisa and Nick came to town. Their trip was WAY too short, but we had the best time. We brought them to one of our favorite local restaurants and got to do a day in New York. We also did a day in Philly and Lisa and I got some girl time out in West Chester. It was so fun for them to finally see where we live and what it's like out here.
Andy's dad and Kathy had a place in California for a bit, so Andy and I decided to make a trip of it over my spring break. We had tried a weekend trip to the West Coast from PA the previous year and realized that with so much travel time, it wasn't easy to do, so we decided to make a week of it this time. We flew in to Los Angeles and went DIRECTLY to In and Out. Except I was a little too excited and chose the first In and Out on the map list and it turned out to be a car rental company. So I quickly rerouted us and there WAS an In and Out BURGER just a mile away, so we went there and ate delicious food. Then we headed to La Quinta (Palm Springs) where Andy's dad was staying. I had the time of my life picking grapefruit and lemons off of every tree I could find. Mike was nice enough to entertain me and tour around the area with me and the golf course finding every last citrus fruit I could find. They were HUGE and so good. We also spent a day golfing.
We left there and drove back towards the coast. Of course I had to drive through Malibu, and then we headed up to Cambria to visit my friend from high school, Ashley, and her family. The drive was absolutely beautiful and incredible. I am always in awe when I see the cliffs dropping into the blue water. We got to Ashley's mid afternoon and had a fantastic time seeing her house, meeting her lovely daughter, and just hanging out and looking at beautiful scenery. We spent our time with them touring their town and tasting as much wine as we could. Leaving was sad, as it always is, and we headed up the coast to drive through the Big Sur towards San Fransisco.
That drive was more beautiful than I remembered, and it was easily the most terrifying at times. Highway 1 is closed due to mud slides in some places so we had to take a mountain pass to get around it. The hairpin turns with mountain on one side, cliff on the other and cars coming around blind corners was terrifying. Andy did an incredible job. I loved every minute of it, once we were past the terrifying part.
I love that I get a week long break in the spring to be able to do trips like this. My break is later in the year next year so I'm not sure where it will take us yet.
My brother, Phil, was able to come out for a very quick weekend so he could also see our new place. The last time he came out was when we were in the apartment, so it had been about a year and a half. He spent a day in D.C. since we had to work and then we did a day in New York with him as well. I LOVE how easy it is to spend a day in all of these fantastic places. It's hard to get bored when you live by so much cool stuff! That was all the time we had with him, but I would say he had a very successful trip with all he got to see in such a short amount of time.
Every year for the past 6 years, Andy and I have picked a music festival to go to. We lean towards Firefly in Delaware, but this year we tried something new and went to Shaky Knees Music Festival in Atlanta, GA. It was both of our first times there (besides touring the lovely airport) and I already am looking forward to going back. We went with a few friends and stayed in a really cool AirBNB loft/apartment. It was in an old Sears building with shops and restaurants connected to us. We had some really good food and we loved the music festival. I took home a souvenir that you can't buy; my favorite bands guitar pick that they threw into the crowd! It was a really fun weekend getaway.
In late May, my parents came to visit. I got to spend my birthday with them and we had a fairly relaxing week. Again, I was pretty busy with school so my parents took the opportunity to travel around and explore on their own. We did have a day to go to Cape May, NJ, which is an adorable beach town. It's very quaint with old Victorian looking homes and a small downtown area. It was fun to wander around there and dip our toes in the water. On their last day in town, I got the letter in the mail that we all just love to get: Jury Duty. I was scheduled for the second week of July. At least I wouldn't be writing sub plans!
June was busy with school (we worked until June 19th!) and then we took off for a week to MN. We loved being back and seeing so many people. As always, we couldn't fit everyone in, but we had a fantastic time with what we were able to do. I had a couple days of touring around town with friends and visiting some much loved and missed places. Matt's Bar, Mall of America, the University of MN campus, and Minnehaha Falls to name a few. We got to take our nephew to Valleyfair for his first time ever and it was so much fun! We all loved that. We spent a day with family in Forest Lake and had a day to go the zoo with the nephews. We really enjoyed everything about that trip.
I came home to Jury Duty and got chosen to be on the jury. There's not a lot to report about it besides that it was a quick trial and I always find the legal process so interesting.
Now, I am off to Florida tomorrow. Andy will stay home with Deb and keep her company while he's not working. A friend of mine from MN moved to FL last week, so I need to go check out her new digs!
I will try to update the blog at least one more time this summer. Every 7 months is a bit infrequent and it makes it tricky to remember everything that's happened!
